2. John George FELD was born on 1 Aug 1905 in rural Silver Creek Township, Stephenson, Illinois. (Pedigree Chart).

     He enlisted in the US Army for 4 years at an early age without his father's consent by overstating his age. He was assigned the job of taking care of the horses and was noted for his excellent horsemanship. He was discharged on June 24, 1926 with the rank of Sergeant in the 18th Field Artillery.
     He died on 17 Jun 1972 in Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois.

      Obituary - Freeport - John G. Feld, 66, 918 E. Clinton St., a retired Freeport police officer, died Saturday in Freeport Memorial Hospital. He retired from the police force in 1955.
     Survivors include his widow, Viola; five daughters, Mrs. Edith Timmer, Ananheim, Calif., Mrs. Dorothy Grinnell, Mrs. Betty Wells and Mrs. Ruth Witters, all of San Diego, and Mrs. Barbara Blair, Freeport; a son, John, Roscoe; four brothers, Richard and Robert, in California, and George and Benjamin, both of Freeport; three sisters, Mrs. Katherine Kraft, Mrs. Grace Fye and Mrs. Gertrude Steffen, all of Freeport; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Walker Mortuary. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the mortuary.

     He was buried on 19 Jun 1972 in Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois. Oakland Cemetery.

 

 


     John was living at 425 S. Float in Freeport when he married Viola Smith. They met when he was a streetcar conductor in Freeport.  The streetcars ran all the way to Krape Park.  He was married to Viola Laura Barbara SMITH on 2 Feb 1928 in Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois. They married at the St. Johns Church parsonage in Freeport Illinois with Lester and Katherine Kraft as witnesses.

 

 

 

Young Viola Smith3. Viola Laura Barbara SMITH was born on 29 Jan 1907 in Cary Station, McHenry, Illinois. (Pedigree Chart). 

Before her marriage, she was living at 529 E. Empire with her father Arthur Albert Smith and his second wife Helen Mosman/Kohler. After their marriage, she and John lived at 533 E. Empire and later bought a home at 918 E. Clinton St., where they raised their children. When her husband passed away, she sold the house and bought a mobile home, living there until she was admitted to the Stephenson Nursing Center some years later.

     She passed away on Dec 27, 1996 at 2:45 pm in the Freeport Memorial Hospital in Freeport, Illinois. Her parents, husband John, two daughters Edith Catherine and Dorothy Ann, her brother LaVerne, her stepmother Helen, and three granddaughters preceded her in death. She was buried in the family plot at the Oakland cemetery in Freeport Illinois on Jan 2 1997 after a memorial service at St. Johns Church in Freeport.  

     Obituary - Freeport- Viola B. Feld, 89, of the Stephenson Nursing Center, died Friday, December 27, 1996, at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 29, 1907, in Cary, she was the daughter of Arthur and Edith (Smith) Smith. She married John G. Feld Feb. 2, 1928, in Freeport. He died June 17, 1972.
     She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, the Semper Fidelis class of the church, Freeport Women's Club, Golden Agers, and for over 50 years a member of the Women of the Moose.
     She is survived by three daughters, Barbara (Thurlow) Blair of Freeport, Ruth (Richard) Witters of San Diego, Calif., Betty (Robert) Wells of Gurnee; one son John G. (Cindy) Feld III of Alton MO.; one brother, LeRoy (Dorothy) Smith of Freeport; 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, one brother, and three granddaughters. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. John United Church of Christ, Freeport, with the Rev. Dr. Richard E. Barbour officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.
     Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ. A memorial fund has been established for the Stephenson Nursing Center Activity Center. Walker Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

child i. Edith Catherine FELD was born on 17 Oct 1929 in Freeport, Stephenson , Illinois. She died on 30 Jul 1986 in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, California. She is buried in Westminster, Orange Co., California at Westminster Cemetery,.
child ii. Barbara Ellen FELD was born on 7 Oct 1932 in Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois.  She married Thurlow N Blair on 19 Jun 1949 in Freeport.  After her husband died on 7 Feb 2008, Barbara also went to be with her Lord on 10 Oct 2008.
